- Scales
- As you may already know most fish are covered with scales. These scales
can feel very different, from the teethlike scales of sharks to flat,
platelike scales of salmon. You can determine a bony fish's age by looking
at there scales. Also, if you look closely at bony fish you will be able to
find a fixed arrangement which you can use to tell there age.
- Bubble nest builders
- Can you believe that there are fish that make nests underwater. These
nests are made by fish named "bubble nest builders". The male makes the nest
by blowing bubbles of air and slime, which he and the female push together
to form a mass of foam that floats on top of the water. Next, the female
lays her eggs and puts them in her nest. While the female is laying her eggs
the male stands guard making sure to catch any eggs that fall out of the
nest and safely putting them back.
- Lots of fish
- There are over 30,000 kinds of fish in the world! From the largest being
a 50-foot (15-m) whale shark to the smallest being fish being the goby of
the Philippines. This tiny fish is less than 1/2 inch (1cm) in length!
